What Order Should Your Child Revise Topics In?

The teaching order is not always the repair order

When several topics need revision, families often begin with the first textbook chapter, the newest school topic or the weakest-looking test result.

Any of these may be reasonable, but none is a reliable rule. Topics are often connected. A current difficulty may depend on an earlier idea that the child cannot yet recall, explain or use securely.

Revision works better when the sequence follows those dependencies. Repair what later work requires before repeatedly practising the later work itself.

Find the first point where the reasoning breaks

Take one question the child cannot manage and ask them to explain the steps they think are needed.

Move backwards until you reach something they can do independently. The next missing step is a useful candidate for earlier attention.

For example, difficulty solving a multi-step Mathematics problem may come from an insecure fraction concept rather than from the final problem type. A weak Science explanation may depend on vocabulary or a relationship introduced in an earlier topic.

This prevents the child from spending time on advanced questions that repeatedly collapse for the same underlying reason.

Distinguish prerequisites from useful background

Not every earlier topic has to be revised before a later one.

A prerequisite is knowledge the child must actively use to understand or complete the current requirement. Other earlier material may be related but not necessary for the immediate task.

Test the suspected prerequisite directly with a simple example. If the child manages it securely, do not restart the whole earlier chapter. Return to the later topic and look for another point of difficulty.

The purpose is to shorten the path to useful learning, not to justify revising everything from the beginning.

Use an order that produces usable steps

A practical sequence often moves from foundation to application.

The child first recovers the required fact or concept. They then explain or carry out the basic method. Next, they practise recognising where it applies. Finally, they use it among mixed or less familiar questions.

The exact stages depend on the subject, but each one should make the next possible. Avoid moving forward merely because a worksheet has been completed. Move forward when the child can perform the requirement that the next stage assumes.

Keep independent topics flexible

Some weaknesses do not depend on one another.

Those topics can be ordered according to importance, available support and the child’s capacity for useful work. It may be sensible to alternate a demanding topic with a more manageable one rather than concentrating every difficult task into one period.

Revision order is therefore not one fixed ladder. Dependencies determine some parts; practical judgement determines the rest.

Let the child explain the sequence

Parents may initially need to identify the connections, especially when the child sees each worksheet as a separate task.

Make the reasoning visible. Explain that one topic comes first because the next uses it, then ask the child to look for the same relationship in another pair of tasks.

Over time, the child can begin asking: What do I need to know before I can do this? Which earlier step is causing the current problem? What can I already leave alone?

That judgement supports more independent revision. The child is no longer only following an assigned order; they are learning how knowledge fits together and where repair should begin.
