Why Can't Your Child Apply What They Know?

Remembering an idea is not the same as using it
A child may explain a concept correctly, reproduce a familiar method and still become stuck when a question presents the same knowledge differently.
This does not necessarily mean the earlier learning has disappeared. The child may know the information but rely on obvious cues to decide when it applies. Once the heading, wording or layout changes, they no longer recognise what the question requires.
Application depends on more than recall. The child must identify the relevant knowledge, select it among alternatives and use it under conditions that may not resemble the original example.
Familiar practice can hide the decision
Topical exercises often tell the child what kind of problem they are solving before they begin.
If every question in a section uses the same method, the child does not need to decide which method applies. They can repeat the recent procedure and appear fluent.
Worked examples can create the same effect. A child may follow the sequence accurately while the model remains visible, but the example is making several decisions on their behalf.
This practice can help at the beginning of learning. It becomes insufficient when it is the only evidence that the child understands.
Ask the child to identify what the question needs
Before calculating or writing, ask the child to explain what information matters and what the question is asking them to find, show or justify.
This reveals whether they can connect the visible problem with the relevant knowledge. A child who chooses the wrong method may not need more calculation practice. They may need help noticing the feature that distinguishes one situation from another.
Compare two similar-looking questions that require different responses. Ask what changes between them and why that change matters. The contrast can make the selection rule clearer than another set of identical examples.
Vary one feature at a time
Application practice does not have to begin with a difficult unfamiliar problem.
Start from a question the child can manage and change one feature. Rearrange the information, remove the topic heading, alter the context or ask for an explanation instead of a numerical answer.
Keeping most of the task familiar allows the child to focus on the changed demand. If everything changes at once, a wrong answer gives little information about which part caused the difficulty.
As the child becomes more secure, combine the requirement with other topics or place it among questions that call for different methods.
Let the child choose before offering a cue
Prompts can help a child begin, but they can also conceal whether the child would have recognised the method independently.
Allow a short attempt before naming the topic or suggesting the first step. If the child is stuck, give the smallest cue that helps and note what the cue supplied.
Needing a reminder of a term is different from needing to be told which operation to use. The type of help required points to the next learning task.
Gradually reduce the cue across later examples. The aim is not simply for the child to complete the question, but to take over the decision that the prompt was previously making.
Check application with genuinely mixed work
Once individual examples are manageable, use a small selection of questions that do not announce the method in advance.
The child should have to determine which knowledge is relevant. Ask them to explain their choice on one or two examples, especially when two methods could appear plausible.
Success on mixed work is stronger evidence than confidence after a repeated exercise. It shows that the child can retrieve the knowledge and recognise where it belongs.
If they still struggle, return to the decision point rather than assigning more mixed questions indiscriminately. Knowing more information will not help if the child cannot yet identify which information the situation calls for.
